Black & Red Series
The sailboat painting was my first painting of the Black & Red Series. While the series itself was inspired by the elegant simplicity of Picasso’s bullfight paintings, I drew this painting’s inspiration from my passion for sailing. I remember my friend Chris and I on a sailboat. We were sailing to a small island off the Gulf of Mexico to camp for the night when the weather suddenly got bad. Before we knew it, we found ourselves on this small thirteen-foot laser in the middle of a storm at about midnight. Battered by rain and tossed around by the wind and the waves, we made our way to the island. Sailing around the island the following day, this painting captures that calm morning we found after such a violent storm. Drifting slowly, sailing around the island, we watched the sunrise glimmer on the mirror-like water. The gentle sea breeze seemed like God was finally catching his breath and was barely enough to push us along. Our sailboat was just a mere spec in the seemingly infinite silence and peace. This painting is dedicated to Christopher Parodi (RIP, my friend)
