Duke of Tokyo painting by Tamassia Martins
Acrylic glazing on canvas (18 x 24 inches)
“While seemingly plain, this painting’s title, colors, and form mix three vastly different cultures. Inspired by a trip to Amsterdam, where Martins attended a party at the Duke of Tokyo, a Japanese Karaoke Club, this piece is a vibrant work of art, using just three colors, white, blue, and orange, orange being Holland’s national color. To achieve the painting’s transparency, the artist used a mix of clear glaze and blue paint to layer twelve silhouettes, one on the other. The figure itself draws from an often unnoticed face carved on one of the stones found at Stonehenge, mixing Dutch, Japanese, and English culture in a simple yet colorful form.” – Artists Live, Magazine, Amsterdam.
