Luna Dolce Luna painting by Tamassia Martins
Oil on canvas (24 x 33 inches)
A conversation with a friend, Alessia, inspired me to write a poem and, later, this painting. It was a beautiful spring evening; we sat in the courtyard of my countryside residence in Italy. Alessia told me she would have conversations with the moon when she was twelve years old. She believed the moon answered back, not in words, but by realizing things within her life. Although not visible in the picture, the painting has many layers of paint applied, one on top of the other, to give it a sense of depth.
While a fictitious idea, I wanted the painting to show a girl reaching for the moon to try and capture the boundless imagination that a young girl can have within her universe. A universe not yet tied down by the “realities” of life.
